Important — Chicago Vendors
The City of Chicago now requires vendors who sell within city limits to have a City of Chicago Tax Registration Number. If you are a Chicago-based vendor and do not have one yet, you will need to obtain it before the event day.
You can register online at chicago.gov/finance or call the Chicago Department of Finance at (312) 744-CITY. Registration is free and typically processed within a few business days.
Important — Food & Beverage Vendors
You do NOT need a Special Event Food License if everything you sell is factory-sealed and pre-packaged — meaning the customer takes it home and opens it themselves.
Examples: bags of coffee, packaged cookies, sealed bottles, canned drinks, jarred products.
You DO need a Special Event Food License if you prepare, mix, pour, or serve anything at your booth.
Examples: coffee brewed on-site, drinks mixed or poured, smoothies, bubble tea, lemonade, baked goods sliced or plated, anything made fresh in front of the customer.
The rule is simple: if you open it, mix it, heat it, pour it, or hand it ready-to-eat — you need the license.
If this applies to you, contact the Chicago Department of Public Health before applying:
